Investigation on drinking water source watersheds and rivers and the water quality improvement strategy

Absrtact
In order to protect safety of drinking water, the EPA monitored water purification plants for the decades. However, the water source of each purification plants are multiple and it derives a need to manage different water source quality. The water quality of water sources is depended on good upstream watershed management. Therefore, this project is aimed to investigate the priority watershed for important water intake points. The 4 investigated watershed were selected by domestic water supply quantity, water quality achievement rate, and direct to water purification plants. They are Badu, Yangshanyang, Shiganba, and Kaoping river. To increase pollution reduction efficiency, pollution hot spot, should be determined. The pollution hot spots were decided by literature review, water quality monitoring data, onsite water sampling tasks, and SWMM model. The target rate, target pollution reduction quantity, and possible reduction strategies were finally suggested for each of the 4 watersheds. The 4 watersheds have already matched the water quality standard of drinking water sources, but they did not achieve waterbody quality standard. The Badu and Yangshanyan were mainly from point pollution sources, but Shiganba and Kaoping river were influenced by both point and nonpoint pollution sources. In addition, the listed industries in the 4 watersheds were surveyed for their potential of emerging contaminants risk. Nine of the industries were further sampled and tested the POPs, environmental hormone, and heavy metals. The results of industry survey could be combined with the data of water purification plants to clarify the possible risk of emerging contaminants on public drinking water.
